I have double layer and single layer Ridgerunners. I don’t use a pad but I prefer the firmness of the double layer Ridgerunner.
I’ve been using my 40oz stainless steel Klean Kanteen bottle, single walled. If I have a campfire going I’ll set the bottle (with loose cap) directly on the coals to bring it to a boil. Saves on...
I’m usually the only one with a hammock when I backpack or bikepack with friends. And I’ve backpacked with a group as large as 20 or more on several occasions. I’m always able to set up my WBRR...
With my WBRR I just bunch it up against the foot end pocket til I need it. I use my feet to retrieve it when it gets cold.
As far as DIY spreader bars, I made my own spreader bars that break down into 7 shorter sections. Foot-end bar breaks down into 3 sections, and the head-end bar breaks down into 4 sections. And...
Better yet, get another Ridgerunner during Black Friday.
I have both the single and double. I recently got the double and as an experiment I slipped my DIY Costco underquilt between the layers and it kept me comfortable during the overnight 50 degree...
The carabiner on one of my strap is color coded (with a piece of bright electrical tape) so you can tell which end is which. I don't use the stuff sack, btw.
Awesome mod, just what I need to do! I'm gonna bring out the dremel tonight...
My dark colored top quilt is hard to distinguish which is in or out if getting back in the hammock in the middle of the night so I tied a short piece of brightly colored cord on the left corner tip...
That's exactly what I was going to ask. Thanks!
I have a netted bridge hammock and do not run a ridgeline. What I did is attach a minimalist cell phone holder/clamp right at the middle of a small L-shaped boomerang. All you do is hold the...
You haven't had a chance to use your hammocks yet? Why not use the supplied, stock buckle suspension first to see if that suits you. Get a set of caribiners to secure the straps around each...
Anything, even shoe laces will work. I'm using 4" lengths of paracord at each corner.
The old spreader bars had pieces that were 20" long, plus that odd 4" piece. The current bar set packs shorter, more compact.
The old spreader bar set used to have a 4" middle piece (male/female ends). You had a choice of using it or not.
They eliminated that short middle piece with the new spreader bars now.
When you say "taco" do you mean like a fold down the entire length? Depending on the user RR's tend to have that somewhat "confining" feel or "shoulder squeeze" to it even with an UQ.
Have...
I've been using my single layer RR with underquilt for some time now. On Back Friday weekend I ordered a double layer RR which I now have and will be experimenting using some of my sleeping pads I...
I got a bunch of goodies in the mail today, most importantly, my new RR I ordered on BF. I also got a couple of other camping gear..... a ThruNite headlamp and a small Olight flashlight.
I have a couple of old sleeping bags which I converted to TQ's by removing the zippers and hoods entirely, and enclosing the bottom end for the foot box. They look ugly, but very effective.
Awesome! Just ordered... :)
I'm ordering another RR but wanna make sure I'm getting that 25%... I'll wait for the fix.
That was my very first set up for a few outings with my RR. Getting in and aligning the BA was a bit of a hassle though, at least for me.
I'm mostly a side sleeper in bed but I can never get comfortable enough side sleeping in the RR. I sleep very comfortably on my back in the RR.
Go Dodgers!
Thanks for making note of that. But as the previous poster noted once you get in the hammock that extra slack might get negated, at pressure points, leaving you with no slack.
I've never been laughed at, but always complimented, especially on hot, sunny days.
Questions...
So, what works best for slipping between the double layers for temps down to 40? Closed cell foam, inflatable, down quilt? Is there enough slack in the bottom layer to maintain loft...
I go to Henninger Flats Campground pretty often. It's just a short, but steep, 2.5 mile hike above Pasadena in the San Gabriel Mountains. And further up there are more trail camps.
That wouldn't work for me because at most spots I hang the ground is rarely level. I use a spirit level app on my phone to sight the hammock from a few feet away and raise the foot-end accordingly.
Nice trip report!
Yeah, one can practically live off of vending machines and the Convini.....
Curious, what's the maximum CCF width I can use in a double layer RR?
I would assume with an XL version of the RR, the wider spreader bar will require a change in suspension geometry especially at the head end of business requiring even greater minimum hang distance...
The bird would have to pluck hard to even produce a note.
I'm 5'8", 170 lbs, and don't have broad shoulders. I love my RR, fits me fine, but every time I'm in it I wonder how folks with broader shoulders can fit in it. It definitely requires a wider...
Sounds like a cable under tension was not seated properly (at the buckle?) and sprung into position during the night.... ???
Even without the bugnet I find that loop to not exert much pulling pressure on the head end spreader bar. I use a 4-piece aluminum spreader bar with one joint falling right in the middle of the...
From your post a month ago perhaps that "flex" you felt was a telltale sign. Unlike a carbon bicycle frame, for instance, I don't think spreader poles are meant to flex at all.
Glad there...
I cut up a cheap Walmart blue pad and rounded the corners. The seat pad fits nicely around the perimeter, inside the pack. It also functions well in the hammock to relieve your cold butt.
I think it's safe to assume that, in general, the larger the pole diameter, the more sections you can have, thus more nesting options.
I'm assuming as long as these bars are as straight as an arrow they can easily handle hundreds of pounds of compressive pressure squarely applied on each end....??
Basically, don't scratch it. Scratch marks or slight gouges will eventually develop into cracks.
I thought my CF mountain bike handlebars were sexy too until they snapped on me while riding. That's one trade off you risk with any ultralight component that's subjected to any kind of load.
Beautiful!
I've posted this before in another spreader-bar thread. I've been using these for a while now. Four sections of head-end bars and three sections of foot-end bars, all nested. Bundled, they fit...
Whatever the material, being able to slip the foot end bars through the head end inserts gives you so much more nesting possibilities.
I get a nice sweeping view out of my Ridgerunner.
Any reason why they don't/can't use aluminum inserts with carbon poles?
Yeah, I see that.
But what if the foot end tubes were small enough in diameter to slip through the head end inserts? Then I think any combination can be configured.
Can you order these CF bars in 3 exact equal length (including inserts) head end bars and 3 nesting foot end bars?
