Well there seems to be an interest in a Michigan Winter Hang and we need to firm up the dates. So lets get a general consensus on the dates.
LOCATION:
LUDINGTON STATE PARK
Ludington state park, that is close to where Nordhouse Dunes is located right (or the dunes are part of the state park)? I'm planning a hike with a few friends there in the spring and would love to see it in the winter. Depending on the date you all choose I may be up for a trip to the other side of Lake Michigan!!
Dunes are just north of state park, think you can hike from SP to Dunes and back.... Not backcountry camping in SP but I think once you entrt Dunes it's all designated wilderness with BC camping...
Someone else chime in with more info if ya got it...
Ludington state park im in!!!
Ahhh,,Ludington, Manistee, Betsie River,,,Platte River,,,Platte Bay,,some of my old stomping grounds chasing king salmon, brown trout, Coho, Steelhead,,,love the hot times I had up there almost every weekend of the fall for years,,,till I got off on a different tangent.!! Hated to see the fishing change.
Havent' been since I was a kid, would be a good excuse to get back home for a weekend
Should have a good case of cabin fever by then.
Nordhouse and the State Park are next to each other. Trails connect.
Mark me down for either date.
Could be tons of snow at that time of the year, and icebergs!!
bring on the snow. Will be a good time to put my new alcohol stove i won on youtube to the test.
I'm good with either dates. There is one "backcountry" site at the SP, but I dont think it will be open.
What I was told, by SP staff, is that one of the loops will be open for camping and a rustic toliet will be available.(No heat, sorry Patrick).
Hey Rich, have you looked at the loop? Last time I was there, none of the loops really looked that good for hanging. Pretty open sites for rvs.
Wait a minute... Stone lives there, save my gas... We need a review of potential hanging at which ever loop they have open...
I've been thru the park quite a few times in the winter. I dont think anyone uses the campground for anything more than a dayhike/snowshoe/x-country ski adventure/parking spot during the cold months.
I cannot recall ever seeing anyone actually camping after deer hunting season is done.
So, my thoughts/answer DblC's question, If we wander some from the "designated" site, I doubt we would ruffle any feathers. If anybody even checks on us??
The way I see it, anybody wacky enough to hang between two trees in the dead of winter in Michigan...Don't mess with them, they are muy loco
my .02 peso's.
Maybe Stone can enlighten us with more info?
Lerms and I were there in early spring and with a little work managed to find three hang spots in one site in a matter of minutes. I think that they open up the Cedars Loop in the winter, I will confirm that with the staff at the SP. I will get out there this week to report of the hang opportunities.
No matter the stiuation, I'm sure that we will bea able to find plenty of good spots.
I'm probably in for either of the dates!
You are going to laugh you rear off when you roll into to Lud'Ville. You will have to look on the south side of Ludington Ave just after you pass James St. for the sign.
"That is 10 minutes of my life that I will never get back" ~ After jeepcahcer told the Pruple Monkey story.
You are really banking on the winter trip is in ludington aren't you?
What about looking at roscommon or somewhere over there? They are suppose to have the best snowshoeing in the state. I assume this trip is car camping or do we need to add a poll for experience?
I thought that was the plan? With the SP we can sort of do both. You could either park right at the site, or park near the entrance and hike in if you wanted. There are options for all skill levels. I'll have to check but depending upon the weekend we choose, they may have a snowshoe making class at the park as well, costs a few bucks but they are awesome snowshoes.
But I digress, up to the group.....
I thought the consensus was for Ludington SP due to several options for peeps of different ability... I think a group could even hike north from SP and overnight at Nord Sat night if the wanted too...
yeah i thought place was set too. I was there this summer it was great.
I say Missouri. Why? Cause its in the middle of the country and not North.. I feel if it was Missouri it would be nice and the weather isn't over powering like some places.. Put that to a vote and see what others think..:shades:
ummm this is for a michigan hang missouri can have one but they cant have a michigan hang now can they.
This is location specific, people random. I thought it to be at Ludington initially due to a whole lot of reasons to incorporate beginners as well as those more advanced. Weather is going to have a whole lot to do with the experience. I think for beginners, a car camping situation makes sense. There are lots of trails at Ludington as I recall for those so inclined. I think a decision is critical to getting commitments. I would want to know a bunch of stuff before I take off for a really cold hang for a few days. I also need time to get it on my calendar.
Pretty sure if will be in Ludington and looks like it will be the weekend of Feb 24... Should we call it???
OK.... Ludington SP, Feb 24, 25, & 26... DONE!!! Now who's goin... I'm IN...
might have to pass on this unless there are some other MN hangers that would like to carpool....
I'm in. Looking forward to trying some of my christmas gifts out, and bit of BSing.
I put it on the calendar, but there is one conflict to work out. If it is resolved, i'm in.
